Ken Haar, BearHooks Creator

Ken Haar, founder of BearHooks and creator of the Wilderness Hanger product, has been enjoying backpacking for more than 20 years. Through his backpacking adventures, Ken has waded through desert canyons in Arizona, witnessed the beauty of the Marron Bells - Snowmass Wilderness in Colorado, and journeyed the High Uintas Mountains in Utah. The destination of one trek, high in Wyoming's Wind River Range, was the dripping glacier where the mighty Green River starts its journey. A favorite trip is the Continental Divide Trail through the Weminuche Wilderness in the San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado.

An adventurer and nature lover at heart, Ken had learned much from his backpacking experiences. But the one thing that had always eluded him was a reliable, easy way to keep food out of the curious paws of bears and other wilderness critters. Like many backpackers, he had tried various methods of protecting food and had all but given up. His interest was renewed by the numerous bear stories he heard while on a 3 week hike along the Colorado Trail between Denver and Durango. With fresh bear stories tucked in the back of his mind, Ken and his wife traveled to Canada, where a bent coat hanger became his first prototype of the Wilderness Hanger. After more than a year of product revisions and field-testing, the BearHooks Wilderness Hangers that he offers to you have the strength, utility, and ease of use that he had hoped for all along.

TIPS

LINE YOUR STUFF SACK WITH A PLASTIC BAG, AND PUT ALL SCENTED ITEMS INTO THE PLASTIC. IT WON'T ATTRACT ANIMALS IF THE ANIMALS CAN'T SMELL IT.
